Sale Limits

There is a 350 item (tag) limit per consignor. Only 200 of those items may be hanging clothing.

LIMITS WITHIN CLOTHING:

  • Infants: Sizes Newborn to 18 Months (including the the size 18-24 months) are limited to 50 items per gender. This is marginally different than in the past. This IS a TOTAL LIMIT across that entire size range per gender. For example: you could bring 50 Girls 12 month items and meet the guideline, or a combination of Girls infant sizes: 10 6M, and 40 12M to total 50. In addition you could bring 20 Boys 6M items, 10 Boys size 12M and another 10 in size Boys 18-24M. That’s 50 girls and/or 50 boys max across the size range, for a total of 100 infant items. That leaves you 150 additional hanging clothing items across all the other sizes. (coats, costumes and swimwear do not count in the infant limits but do, of course, go against the total limit) You are always welcome to bundle outfits and same-size like items together under one tag. For July sales we also allow 75 of your items to be summer/back to school.

  • Teen Girls Clothing: 20 pieces (yes, this is NEW!) NO MOM CLOTHES!

  • Maternity: We’re bringing it back in 2024. You may consign your best 12 maternity pieces

LIMITS WITHIN OTHER WEARABLES:

  • Accessories (socks, gloves, hats, hairbows, belts etc.) 20 items TOTAL per seller

  • Shoes Our shoe limit has been relaxed. You may bring as many excellent condition shoes that you like in sizes “Lil Kid 4” - Big Kid 7.5 Shoe limits exist only in our smallest and largest sizes. We limit Infant CRIB shoes (shoes between the sizes of 0-3.5) and teen shoes in adult sizes above 7.5. The maximum # Crib Shoes per seller is 6 pair. Every seller is limited to 6 pair of shoes per size above 8 and/or to 12 pair TOTAL across all sizes above 8

Categories and How to Use Them

Info about how & why we do it the way we do!

Plus the breakouts on where things go!

Honestly, we’d love to run the whole event with only 6 or 7 big categories—Clothes, Shoes, Books, Toys, Kid Gear, Infant Stuff and Home Goods, and while those are sort of the “areas of the store” where we place things, for reporting and space planning, we’ve designated 6 or 8 categories and sub categories in each of those areas that really help us (and you) when tagging.

Many items have their own specific category (think strollers) and others are more broad (like Girls Clothing). It definitely helps to scroll through the ENTIRE CATEGORY LIST and familiarize yourself with it before you start entering.

It might also help you to know why we do it the way we do it (and we’re certain that you’ll be thrilled to know that we’ve collapsed the categories for clothing and books! No more breakouts there) We use the categories the way we do:

  • 1) So that we can run reports and review WHAT sells best. (and share it with you for next time) This is not necessarily an indication of where we will place items on the floor.

  • 2) So that we can limit specific items on the sales floor by seller and overall And finally . . .

  • 3) So that we can avoid confusion in our online events where it may not be easy to tell from a photograph whether an item is a Teen Size 2 or an Infant Size 2

What goes where:

  • Every clothing item goes into one of just 3 categories per gender:

Infant Clothing, Clothing or Teen Clothing. It’s that simple!

Infant Clothing-Boy and Infant Clothing-Girl contain sizes Preemie ,Newborn, 0-3M, 3M, 3-6M, 6M, etc. etc. up to the range size of 18-24M. These categories are limited to 50 per gender per seller.

For “kid clothing” beginning with size 24M and continues through size 18 you will use the basic categories of Boy’s Clothing and Girl’s Clothing.

Teen Boy Clothing (Men’s sizing, S-XXL) and Teen Girl Clothing (Junior/Missy /Women’s sizing XXS-XL) use letter (S/M/L) sizing. The Teen Girl Clothing category is limited to 20 items total per seller.

Note: Dance wear, gymnastics leotards, swimwear, baseball pants & outer wear all get tagged here! Where we hang them in the store is another story.

Special Note: There is still a Boutique Category (and a list) for both genders that you can choose to use. We don’t always pull boutique items out to a separate area though!

There is a 200 tag/item limit per seller for hanging clothing. Costumes are not included in that number. Swimwear, dancewear & outerwear do count in the overall limit of 200 but don’t count in the Infant and Teen Girl limits.

Bundling like items and outfits is encouraged.

  • Costume is a unisex category with all sizes available from Newborn- Kid 18 and Teen sizes S-XL as well. Halloween costumes are only accepted at our Fall/ Back-to -School events, but children’s dress-up outfits for pretend play may use the Costume category in spring.

Boy’s Accessories and Girl’s Accessories are the categories to use for: Gloves, Mittens, Scarves, Hats, Umbrellas, Hairbows, Hairbands, Tights, Socks, Kid Purses, Undergarments (must be new in package) Sunglasses etc. Basically, anything a child would wear that is not hanging clothing or shoes.

Note: Backpacks and Lunchboxes have their own categories and are not considered accessories.

  • There are 4 shoe categories: Shoes-Infant, Shoes-Lil’ Kid, Shoes Big Kid, and Teen Shoes. These are separated by gender of course.

Boy (or Girl) Shoes Infant- (0-4.5), Sizes in this category include the infant/crib shoes sizes of 0-3 as well a size 4 and 4.5. Crib Shoes are limited to six pair per seller total.

The category for little kid shoes is Girl (or Boy) Shoes-Lil’ Kid (5-13.5).

Bigger kids’ sizes go from 1-7.5 in categories either Boy or Girl-Shoes Big Kid (1-7.5).

And finally, Teen Boy Shoes has available sizes 8-13.5 and Teen Girl Shoes has available sizes 8-11.

NOTE: Tag your cleats and dance shoes under shoes and describe them as “Dance” or “Cleat”. We generally leave them where YOU drop them off but depending on space they may be in the shoe section for with Sporting Goods.

  • There are sooo many baby & toddler items! Y’all sell the coolest stuff and we have to try and make sense of it. These categories include everything you would need to care for an infant or toddler (and a few things for Mom too)

Maternity (clothing, nursing bras , nursing covers etc. in sizes S-XL). You are limited to your best 12 pieces/seller.

Strollers, Car Seats, Cribs, Pack and Plays, Gates and High Chairs all have their own category because we limit how many of these we accept.

For other “large-ish” infant gear like swings, bouncers, exersaucers, activity mats, play yards, walkers etc. choose either Infant-Large Item or Infant Equipment. You might use the Furniture category for a nursery rocker or glider or a changing table or bassinet but it would be just fine to put any or all of those in Infant -Large Item as well.

There is a toy category, Toy-Infant for all the lovies, rattles and soft toys. Toddler push toys can just go under the generic Toy.

The remaining categories are: Blanket, Infant Carrier, Diaper Bag, Feeding /Utensils (bottles, sippy cups, bibs, toddler plates, breast pump accessories etc.-not the breast pumps though, we can’t take those.) and Diapering (diapers, potties, diaper genies training pants, absorbent pads etc.)

Everything else goes in Infant-Misc. This is the place for crib sheets, Boppy pillows, Bumbo seats, new in the package pacifiers, shopping cart carriers, bathing items, baby monitors and all the other cool little infant care items that didn’t even exist when I had my kids! Use you best judgement.

In the store you will place it with like items.

  • Games, Books, Puzzles, Video Games, DVDs and Arts & Crafts are each single categories that are available to you.

Bikes and Sporting Goods are also pulled out separately.

The generic “Toy” category will hold 90% of all the toys in the store! You could put them all in here!

But, for tracking and planning purposes we ask that you use Toy-Infants for soft crib toys, Toy-Large for doll houses, kitchens, tool benches, easels and similar sized items that will be placed on the floor and not on tables and Toy-Outdoor for playhouses, slides, wagons, Cozy Coupes and other large plastic pieces.

These sub categories assist in floor space planning. Thank You.

  • Bike is a separate category.

All the other sports equipment should be tagged as Sporting Goods and hung together in one large section. This category holds, baseball gloves, sleeping bags, bike helmets, golf clubs, balance beams, swing set parts, and nearly anything else you can think of. If it’s sports related, put it here.

Note: Musical instruments that aren’t toys can go in here too. Drumming is a sport, right?

  • If it has to do with a kid’s room, use the category: Decor-Children. Remember, we do not accept crib bedding sets.

If it has nothing to do with kids then it will go in the Mommy’s Mart/Decor & More area. Use the categories: Kitchenware, Luggage, Pet Supplies, Women’s Handbag, Decor-General, Decor-Seasonal or Home-General for all your Mommy’s Mart items including tools, office supplies & party supplies.

  • Never, never, never bring glitter to the sale and never use this category! Ha! (I need a laughing emoji here!)

If you see this category in your list and your are tempted to use it , please resist. (Seriously, it’s a special test category for staff use only!)

However, if you’ve read this far I will reward you for that! Email me at hello@tarheelkidsconsignment.com and I’ll send you a $5 off $40 coupon.

How to Prepare your items:

  1. Always Log onto your account through the Tar Heel Kids Consignment Login Link found in the Navigation menu on every page of the website.

  2. From your MyCM Home Page, choose Manage Items and then “Add:

  3. There is now a voice entry option! Try it out or just choose “Manual Entry” and

  4. Enter Price /Click Discount or Donate /Size

  5. Descriptions are two lines long. Good descriptions allows us to match missing tags and to search for an item within our system. If you make it generic, or heaven forbid, leave it out, and the tag comes off, we won’t be able to find it and you will likely not get paid for your item. Please list the BRAND somewhere in the first line and be a descriptive as you can.

  6. Category (make sure you change between items ie:  Girls Accessories, Toys-Outdoor etc.) *Every clothing item must have a category and a size to be accepted for sale.  Please do not mark CLOTHING items with SEE DESCRIPTION or BLANK CATEGORY ever! Side note: if you are bringing clothing for teen girls and boys please read the updated guide on that.

  7. NEVER USE A SIZE for anything except clothing or shoes. Sizes on “stuff” should always be blank.

  8. Decide how many of these tags that you want to create:  ie: If you have a lot of sleepers, blankets, etc. this will determine the number of tags to print (neat and saves time! but you will likely need to edit each one to add better descriptions or change sizes!)

Transferring items between seasons of other Tar Heel Sales is so easy now! There is a button for it on your MyCM home page, and there is a video on the cheat sheet. If you need help transferring from other MyCM sales (like Sail Again for example) please reach out for help. Email us at hello@tarheelkidsconsignment.com or message us on the consignor FB page. Please note, your consignor number should be the same for Sail Again and Tar Heel Kids but if you wish to transfer items between sales other than .those, you still can . . . you won’t have to reenter your items, but you will likely need to reprint your tags.

Finally, You do not have to enter all of your items at one time. Your tags will be saved and you can pick-up where you left off.

Please sort items by size and gender category. We pull Outwear, Swim, and Costumes out into their own separate sections. Drop-Off will go faster if you do the same. For a list of boutique brands CLICK HERE Shoppers in our Junior/Teen Girls Department are picky and you are limited to only 20 items in Teen Girls. BRING YOUR BEST.

Card stock tags are less likely to fall off your items. Including a Good Description (with Brand and some identifying note) for each item is YOUR insurance policy that if your tag falls off we can either identify it to sell at check out, match the lost tag, or return it to you at the end of the sale.

Important Information About Tagging:

  • We got a NEW TAG is 2021. Note the seller # in the top right. (Last Initial, First Initial, last 4 of phone).

  • Please only use (1) one safety pin per card, oriented vertically or a tagging gun with tag placed in the seam under the arm or in the manufacturer’s tag.

  • Minimum item price of $4.00. (50 cent increments are encouraged)

  • After you have tagged your items, please bundle your clothing by size and gender category in your car. You may band sizes together for drop off if its easier for you but you’ll need to remove the banding when you inspect and hang up your clothes. Keep , coats/outerwear and costumes & swimwear separate.

  • PLEASE ONLY PRINT ON ONE SIDE OF THE CARD and USE ONLY ONE CARD PER ITEM. Items that have double-sided tags will not be sold or returned at the end of the sale.

  • Competitively price your items. PRICE TO SELL! What would you pay? Normally 25-40% of retail is a good general figure to go by when pricing your items. We'd rather give you a bigger check than a lot of unsold items! See our Pricing Tips for more details on pricing your items click here.

Hanger opens on the left. Tag is on the right.

Clothing:

Looking down at the garment, attach the tag vertically (up and down) with a safety pin (please do not use a straight pin) near the upper right side of the garment. All clothing items should be hung with the hook facing left.(like a question mark) Please use safety pins to hang pants, shorts and other accessories on the back on the shoulders rather than folding them over the hanger or pinning at the bottom of a top. This will pull and possibly tear your garment. Any clothing items that are not tagged correctly will be declined and returned at the end of the sale, including wrong season and too many items per restricted sizes Newborn through and including 18-24 Months.

Shoes:

Please use zip ties or large safety pins to attach shoes.  Pin card securely to shoes. Please DO NOT use CLEAR packing tape around the entire shoe as it will leave a sticky residue on the shoes! PLEASE DO NOT USE SHOE BOXES!  YOUR SHOES WILL BE SEPARATED FROM THE BOX!

We’ve relaxed our shoe limit! We love selling shoes! Bring us your excellent condition shoes and we will get them sold. We only limit Crib shoes (infant sizes 0-3.5) and Teen Shoes. Please bring fewer than 6 pairs of those. Also, just a note—our inspectors are BRUTAL with shoe inspection. Bring us your best!

Toys, Infant Gear, Mommy’s Mart and other “Stuff”

All items brought to the sale MUST be in working order.

Please do not bring items that are broken, battery packs that are corroded, dirty, or are missing parts. Those items will be pulled from the floor.

Please be sure all pieces and parts are included with games and puzzles. Shoppers hate to get home with their new treasures and find that they are missing pieces and parts or broken! And you will hate the fine associated with those returns! It’s 1.5 times the price of the item AND you don’t get the item back. Please check for missing parts to games, puzzles and building toys!

On large items, simply tape the tag to the item for easy viewing and removal. If the item includes extra parts, please make note of them in the item's description. IMPORTANT: Place masking tape with your consignor number & price on the bottom or underneath side of items that have multiple pieces

It is critical that all small pieces and toy parts are securely attached and labeled with consignor number and price.  Tar Heel Kids cannot be responsible for missing items.

Books:

Tar Heel Kids Consignment is so excited about how our book section has grown over the past few seasons! We organize our books by category. Please drop-off with intention. Over the seasons we have seen many ways consignors have packaged their books.
We recommend:

  1. Painter’s tape is your friend when it comes to books! Use it to place the tag on the back cover!!!

  2. If you are bundling books and CANNOT fit them in a gallon bag, we suggest using saran wrap to “wrap” the books and tape the tag on the outside of the wrap

In general, book shoppers hate bundles of books where they can not open each one . . .but also . . . Many times when the tag is taken off the book(s) it will rip the cover of the book. We’d like to help you avoid both of these scenarios. Please use your best judgement
